Leading children's charities have issued fresh calls to ban smacking across the UK. Scotland and Wales already ban the physical punishment of children. But in England and Northern Ireland, it's not unlawful to smack your child if you can prove it was 'reasonable punishment'... something that's judged on a case-by-case basis and considers things like the force of the smack and a child's age. In new NSPCC polling, 81 per cent of parents with children under the age of 18 said physical punishment against a child is unacceptable. The charity said its research should be a 'wake up call' to lawmakers. However, Tory peer Lord Jackson has warned against a wider ban, arguing it could criminalise 'good and caring parents'.
