It was founded on October 20, 1990, through a joint venture between Grupo Abril and MTV Networks, owner of the American channel MTV. It was the third version of MTV to be launched in the world and the first to be launched on free-to-air television. The station's headquarters were located in the Victor Civita Building in São Paulo, at Avenida Professor Alfonso Bovero, 52, in the Sumaré neighborhood, where the headquarters of Rede Tupi had previously been located. This building was listed as a historical landmark by the Council for the Defense of Historical Heritage (Condephaat), being the first in the capital of the state of São Paulo to be listed. In the early 2010s, it was considered the largest youth network and the seventh largest television network in Brazil, and was even considered by the newspaper Meio & Mensagem as the fifth most admired TV station in the country. Furthermore, MTV Brasil was the first segmented TV channel in the country dedicated to a young audience, and also the first segmented Brazilian TV station to broadcast its programming 24 hours a day. In June 2013, Grupo Abril began the process of returning the MTV brand to Viacom due to the major financial crisis that both the group and the station were facing. The station ceased broadcasting on September 30, 2013. Viacom, in turn, relaunched MTV on pay TV the following day. The network previously occupied by the station on free-to-air television, owned by Abril Radiodifusão, began retransmitting programs from the then-defunct Ideal TV.
