Kaligiyunte - Face-Off in Ragam Keeravani | Carnatic Classical

Saint Thyagaraja’s fervent pleas to Lord Rama for mercy, epitomized through the beauty of raga Keeravani. Well known Thyagaraja Kriti ‘Kaligiyunte’ in raga Keeravani, Adi talam, presented as a Face Off between the singers and the instruments, the Veena and the Piano. The piece starts with a Virutham from Kamba Ramayanam, gently rolls into the Kriti and on to its Charanam ‘Baguga Sree Ragu’ that slowly shifts into a Neraval. Then the Swaram, as the pièce de résistance of the face off, begins in Keeravani and moves through other complementary ragas Sahana, Amruthavarshini, Reethigowlai and Ranjani before coming back to Keeravani to begin a ‘Korappu’ or reducing Talam counts. The performance ends with a Korvai or complex pattern of notes by all the performing artists that leads up to the finale.
