Farmers worked on their land and paid rent or a share of their crops to the zamindar. Zamindars acted as middlemen between the British government and the farmers. They were responsible for collecting taxes from peasants and giving a fixed amount to the British. Because of this system, many farmers were poor and in debt, while zamindars often lived in big houses called havelis and enjoyed a wealthy lifestyle. This old haveli in the video is a reminder of that time. Its large rooms, courtyards, and design show the power and status zamindars once had in society.
