Lecture 6 Wilayah: between Ghuluww and Taqsir What is ghuluww? What is taqsir? And why have these two terms become some of the most misunderstood labels in Shi'a Islam? In this Muharram lecture, Dr Sayyed Rehan Naqvi explores the origins of ghuluww (exaggeration) and taqsir (deficiency) regarding the station of the Ahlulbayt (as), tracing their development from early Kufah to contemporary Shi'a communities. Who were the ghulat? What did they actually believe? Why did ghuluww emerge in Iraq? What social, psychological and theological factors contributed to its rise? And do some of those same tendencies still exist today? Drawing upon the works of Shaykh al-Saduq, Shaykh al-Mufid and Allama al-Majlisi, this lecture examines the difficult question of where the boundary lies between ghuluww and taqsir, and why some of the greatest scholars in Shi'a history disagreed on certain issues while remaining united on the centrality of Tawhid. The lecture concludes with a discussion of tafwid, true wilayah, and the Qur'anic concept of faqr (absolute dependence upon Allah).
