Make Your Own DIY Bouncy Rubber Egg | UniLab | UniLand Kids
Welcome to the UniLab, UniLand’s very own science show, that explores the wonders of the Universe. Move over Bill Nye the Science Guy, there are new scientists in town! We’ll be breaking down some complicated STEM/STEAM lessons by doing our own DIY experiments and explorations, perfect for you to do at home or show off at your school science fairs! So grab those safety goggles and have an adult nearby so we can visit the UniLab. ------- 🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴OSMOSIS 🔴🔴🔴🔴🔴 ✍🏼OBJECTIVES📝 Students will be able to do the following: • Define Osmosis ✅ • Understand how osmosis plays a part in creating your own rubber egg. ✅ • Recreate the process of Osmosis. ✅ 😳WHAT IS OSMOSIS?😱 Can you peel a raw egg and make it bounce? 😮 🤔 Egg shells🥚, like our bones💀, are made up of a mineral called calcium carbonate. And while egg shells 🥚 appear completely solid, the outer membrane of the egg (also known as the shell) is semipermeable🌫️. When something is semipermeable, it means water 💦 and other substances, can easily pass through it through a process known as Osmosis. Osmosis is the tendency of water to move across a membrane from a place of high water concentration to low water concentration. 💦➡️💧Specifically, it is the movement of liquid, like water 💦, and not particles, dissolved in water. Water is continually in motion 🏃🏼🏃🏼until equilibrium is reached. That means, the flow of water continues until both sides have an equal concentration of the solution. So in order to create your own 🏏 bouncy, rubber egg the process of osmosis is needed. Why? Well, a 🐔 chicken’s egg is made of calcium carbonate which is a combination of carbons, calcium and oxygen. Vinegar is made of 💥 acetic acid. So when you combine the egg and the vinegar, you are recreating a chemical reaction 💣 similar to the one you create a volcano with baking soda and vinegar. That reaction is osmosis in action because the vinegar is crossing ➡️ over the egg’s membrane and inflating 🎈 the egg. The process does a sort of pickling which hardens the egg from the outside and allows it to bounce or roll without breaking. 💪So let’s try to recreate this process by creating our own Bouncy, Rubber Egg! 💪 👨🏾🔬Grab Your Safety Goggles, UniLanders!👩🏻🔬 ➡️➡️➡️💫Bouncy, Naked Rubber Egg💫⬅️⬅️⬅️ INGREDIENTS: • Distilled White Vinegar 😝 • 1 egg 🥚 • Jar or Vase 🥛 RECIPE: • Carefully place your egg in a jar. • Cover your egg with distilled white vinegar. Make sure the egg is covered completely. • Let sit for 24 hours. • After 24 hours, use a spoon to hold your egg and drain the vinegar. • Refill the jar with new vinegar and set aside for a week. • After a week, rinse off your egg and it’s ready for play. 👩🏼🏫LESSON REVIEW 😜 • What is Osmosis? • What other chemical reaction is similar to what’s happening to your egg when it comes into contact with vinegar? • How does your eggshell change after coming into contact with vivinegar?----------- Have a science lesson that’s stumping you?
