I Went To The Snowiest City In America...
I visited Houghton, Michigan, the Snowiest City in the United States, in one of the most remote parts of America to investigae why there is so much snow, and why over 8,500 people choose to live here. Houghton, nicknamed "Snowton" is located in the remote Keweenaw Peninsula of the already isolated and sparsely populated Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Averaging 218 inches of annual snowfall, the UP's 4th largest city recieves more snow than ANY OTHER place in the world that is not dependent on elevation, and among towns with at least 5,000 residents, it is the Snowiest City in the USA. The next snowiest city, Truckee California only recieves 206 inches of snow per year. And one year, the winter of 1978-1979, Houghton actually saw 356 inches or nearly 30 feet of snow! That's more than Aomori, Japan (the snowiest city in the world's) average annual snowfall of 312 inches! So why does it snow so much here? And why do 8,508 people live in not just the Snowiest City in America, but also one of the most isolated, being over 200 miles or a 4 hour drive away from the nearest city with a metro population over 100,000 residents? Join me on this epic road trip (where we also visit a MASSIVE Ghost Town - The Quincy Mine) to find out.
