There are many different accounts of the death of Judas Iscariot. As we know from the primary source for us Christians, the New Testament. There are other sources outside the New Testament, such as the opinion of a Church Father named Saint Papias, who lived around 60 AD to 130 AD, and also several apocryphal or unverified gospels, such as the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus. Below we present some of these opinions. The Catholic Church has never officially stated that Judas Iscariot was destined for hell. In the Second Vatican Council, the Church only emphasized in general that humans must always be vigilant so as not to fall into "eternal fire," like the wicked and lazy servant (as in the Gospel of Matthew 25), or into "outer darkness, where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth" (as in the Gospel of Matthew 22:13 and Matthew 25:30).
