Wastewater Whiteboard: Coagulation & Flocculation in Primary Treatment (CEPT) & Some Tertiary Uses

Welcome! I am a CA Grade 4 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator and Chief Plant Operator. I also hold a CA D3 Drinking Water Distribution Operator Certificate and a CA T2 Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate. Welcome back to The Wastewater Whiteboard, which distills concepts down into easy-to-understand discussions. Today we get into the uses of coagulants and flocculants in Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment (CEPT) and some tertiary treatment applications such as phosphorus removal. We start by discussion the process of Coagulation and what a coagulant is, then move on to flocculation and flocculants. Then we discuss some considerations such as floc shear, jar tests, and sludge conditioning due to some byproduct from the use of ferric chloride and aluminum sulfate (alum). Lastly, I give 3 real world scenarios where I've had to use coagulants and flocculants in a plant. This info is relevant to all grades and all levels of test takers out there and will most benefit entry level exam takers who are taking their Grade/Level/Class III, IV, and V wastewater, as well as Class B and A on the ABC exams.
