The name "Super Mario Bros." was henceforth synonymous with success. While two different versions of Super Mario Bros. 2 were released in Japan and the West, Super Mario Bros. 3 was released worldwide and, due to its enormous ambition, still holds the title "King of 8-Bit Platformers." After the SNES launch in 1990 with the release of Super Mario World, another 2D platformer in the Mario series—unofficially known as Super Mario Bros. 4—the franchise went quiet for a long time. While the games were re-released for the GBA as part of the Super Mario Advance series, Nintendo, like all other game developers, was in a transitional phase towards 3D. For years, 2D was considered outdated and practically extinct. Then, in 2006, Nintendo had the idea to revive the popular series and continue the franchise with New Super Mario Bros. The game was a smash hit, prompting Nintendo to make it their mission to release an installment on every subsequent console. The Nintendo Wii version was released in 2009, followed by both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions in 2012. Many fans enjoyed the games but wished they could also create and design their own levels. Large hacking communities formed around the old and new Super Mario Bros. games, aiming to exploit this very issue. Nintendo responded by releasing Super Mario Maker on the Nintendo Wii U to celebrate the series' 30th anniversary, marking a turning point: For the first time, fans could legally create, share, and play levels together. However, the game's greatest strength was also its greatest weakness: the Wii U. While the GamePad was fantastically integrated, the console's general unpopularity meant that Super Mario Maker didn't reach the fanbase it had hoped for. Therefore, a Nintendo 3DS version was initially released in 2016, but its lack of online capability resulted in only moderate success. Finally, during a Nintendo Direct presentation in February 2019, a sequel for the Nintendo Switch, Super Mario Maker 2, was announced and released on June 28, 2019. With Super Mario Maker 2, Nintendo relied on tried-and-tested elements. The level editor was complemented by several new features. The game styles Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. also returned. These were complemented by Super Mario 3D World as a new building style, adapted to a 2.5D world. The core principle of players creating levels, sharing them online, and rating them remained unchanged, although a feature to give negative ratings was added. Players can participate in online competitions both competitively and cooperatively. A patch will soon allow online play with friends. A more extensive single-player experience, dubbed "Adventure Mode," was also introduced. In this mode, Builder Mario must help rebuild Peach's Castle, which was accidentally destroyed.
