PLEASE NOTE 1. The guide hired as part of the Funivia dell'Etna "Tour 3000" package only provides guided tours at altitudes of 2850-2920m above sea level. 2. Climbing active cones (above 3000m above sea level) on your own is illegal – you must hire a licensed mountain guide outside of the Funivia dell'Etna program. 3. During periods of increased volcanic activity, the route to the active cones is unavailable, even with a guide. NOTE FOR THOSE TRAVELLING BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT From Catania, you can take the AST (Azienda Siciliana Trasporti) bus to Rifugio Sapienza, the starting point for visits to Mount Etna. Buses depart from Piazza Giovanni XXIII in Catania and reach Rifugio Sapienza in approximately 2 hours. To get from Taormina to Mount Etna, take the AST or Etna Trasporti bus to Catania, then transfer to the bus to Rifugio Sapienza. There is no direct public transport connection from Taormina to Mount Etna. Bus details: Line: AST (Azienda Siciliana Trasporti). Departure: From Catania at Piazza Giovanni XXIII.
