On May 12, the North Caucasus District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don began a criminal hearing against former Makhachkala mayor Said Amirov, his nephew Yusup Dzhaparov, and six other defendants. In this case, the former Makhachkala mayor and his alleged accomplices are charged with organizing the murder of an investigator, as well as with "Participation in an Illegal Armed Group," "Banditry," "Terrorist Act," and "Illegal Arms Trafficking." Said Amirov had previously been sentenced to 10 years in prison for plotting a terrorist attack. His nephew, Yusup Dzhaparov, received an eight-and-a-half-year sentence in the same case. A team of lawyers led by Vladimir Postanyuk is representing Amirov and Dzhaparov. In his appeal to the court, Said Amirov stated that he was innocent, that the case was fabricated from start to finish, and that his testimony was obtained under torture.
