John Shook on Value Stream Mapping and Learning to See

On February 2nd 2022 I sat down with John Shook, Chairman, Lean Global Network; Senior Advisor, Lean Enterprise Institute, and the co-author with Mike Rother of the seminal book "Learning to See" that introduced the world to Value Stream Mapping. The conversation was fascinating as we understand the origins in Toyota of Value Stream Mapping, something known internally as Materials and Information Analysis. We learn where the name Value Stream Mapping came from, and why the book came to be called Learning to See. We discover that the use of VSM has been distorted and that it really is a design system for simple systems, and it's primary use is NOT to find waste, although we always want to detect waste or non-value-added activity. We talk about the utility of VSM in complex systems as well as non-manufacturing environments such as offices and digital systems.
