Following the death of Alexander the Great, his vast empire was divided into the famous Successor Kingdoms. Among these, one of the most remarkable was the Kingdom of Pergamon, a small power in Asia Minor that managed to become one of the most important cultural centres of the Hellenistic world. In this documentary, you will discover the complete history of the Kingdom of Pergamon: from its founding under Phileter, to the independence secured by Eumenes I, right through to its golden age under Attalus I and Eumenes II. We’ll look at the construction of the famous Library of Pergamon, the magnificent Altar of Pergamon, its special relationship with the Roman Republic, and the surprising decision by Attalus III to bequeath the kingdom to Rome.
