What happens when you make function the "god" of your design, at the expense of the people you are designing for? Welcome to the first episode of The Spatial Review by Spatial Perspectives. Today, Emmanuel Adekanmbi sits down with Wellington and Tofunmi to critically analyze one of the most iconic structures at the University of Lagos: The Faculty of Arts Building. A staple of tropical modernism and heavy concrete brutalism, this building was designed with distinct circulation paths and massive courtyards to handle the Lagos climate. But decades later, as the volume of students has multiplied, severe friction points have emerged. In this session, we strip away the aesthetics and break down the building's floor plan, its response to the tropical sun, and the ultimate architectural lesson: When a space is designed purely for rigid function rather than human adaptability, there will come a time when the building begins to fail its users.
