All About Green Manure. Plus Chelsea Flower Show and Freezing Beans || Plot 37 (Episode 77)

Green Manure is such an incredibly useful set of plants to use in a vegetable garden or allotment or even on a much larger scale. Green manure is a broad name given it many different cover crops that are grown for their effect on improving the soil structure or available nutrients for the following crop or as a way to preserve the open bare soil between crops. I am also sowing Field Beans which are a small form of the broad bean (or fava) and like legumes in general can fix nitrogen from the air to make it available to the following crop in the soil. This is particularly important with things like Brassicas and leafy vegetables like chard and spinach. the beans also provide top growth for a spring mulch. You can harvest the field beans as they are just a much smaller form of the classic broad bean. The third green manure i'm sowing is actually a mixture of Vetch, Rye and Fiji Peas. Seed mix green manures can be fantastic for a general overall improvement of the soil fertility and structure because they can perform a variety of roles. In this case the Vetch and Peas are nitrogen fixers and the rye is an excellent soil surface protector. I have written a blog post about why we started using green manure here: [https://plot37.com/2020/08/26/what-is...](https://plot37.com/2020/08/26/what-is...) This week was such a busy week in the vlog. Mum and I went to Chelsea Flower Show. I missed it last year when it was cancelled so it was lovely to be back there. Especially lovely to catch the one and only September Chelsea! As we are coming into autumn we are starting to think about storing fresh produce for the winter: French Beans and Leek are being frozen for use over the coming months. Although we will have leeks later on, i had to harvest a large number last week and so freezing them is better than letting the go to waste! || JOIN: The Plot 37 Mailing List : [https://plot37.com/subscribe/](https://plot37.com/subscribe/) || CONTACT: Subscribers, please use this email: [email protected] For collaboration or business enquiries, please use : [email protected] || VIDEO GEAR USED: I film everything on my iPhone with the aid of these tools: My Gimbal (stabiliser): https://amzn.to/2TSgCjl My Gooseneck Clamp: https://amzn.to/3fthzWW Back up Battery (This thing is a LIFE SAVER): https://amzn.to/3jon7TQ || TOOLS & SERVICES USED: Where I find my Music (Epidemic Sound): [https://www.epidemicsound.com/referra...](https://www.epidemicsound.com/referra...)
