The 106th Infantry Division, commanded by Major Anatoliy Shapiro, fought resistance until it reached the concentration camp. The operation involved clearing mines and fighting SS guards. The soldiers found about 9,000 survivors in extreme conditions of malnutrition and disease. The date became a historical landmark, revealing the Nazi genocide. Auschwitz symbolizes the Holocaust, where more than 1.1 million people, mainly Jews, were killed under the "Final Solution". The camp was a machine of extermination, with gas chambers, crematoria, forced labor, starvation and disease. Josef Mengele conducted cruel experiments on the prisoners. In late 1944, the Nazis partially destroyed the camp and forced the prisoners to march in events called "death marches". Many died, and those who remained were found in deplorable conditions. Liberation did not end the suffering. Survivors faced mistrust, refeeding syndrome and infectious diseases, as well as psychological trauma. Today, Auschwitz is a museum that preserves the memory of the victims, educates future generations and warns against misinformation, reinforcing the commitment to historical truth to prevent new tragedies.
