More Than a House: A Look Inside New Zealand's Most Beautiful Hideaway

#house #architecture #housedesign The journey to Scrubby Bay was a pilgrimage, not a trip. It began with the growl of a four-wheel-drive, a trusty steed navigating a narrow track etched into the clifftops. Below, the Pacific Ocean churned, its waves a relentless rhythm against the storm-lashed coast. The air was a wild mix of salt spray and the earthy scent of the 600-hectare sheep and cattle station, a vast, rugged expanse that felt both ancient and alive. As the vehicle crested a final rise, a striking form emerged from the landscape—a gabled timber building, its silhouette a timeless echo of the station's heritage structures. It stood like an opera diva, bold and commanding, singing into the wind. This was Scrubby Bay, a private retreat designed by Patterson Associates, a place where architecture dared to stand tall against the overwhelming power of nature. It wasn't designed to be quiet or unobtrusive; it was a character in the story of this land. The designers, inspired by the enduring character of the coastline and the rich tapestry of Māori history and mythology, saw the bay as a natural amphitheater, the beach an orchestra pit, and the coastal plain a stage. The building itself was a performer, a piece of driftwood thrown upon the shore by the sea, temporary in geological time yet deeply connected to the planet. Approaching the house, the architecture's material language became clear. The sawn cedar-clad walls, roof, and decks were a soft, muted tone, destined to weather and age over time, blending with the sun-drenched crops and the bleached driftwood on the beach. It was an homage to the land, a structure that understood its place in the grand scheme of things. Andrew Patterson, the director of the firm, reflected on this, noting that the lightweight timber construction was a nod to the future, allowing the dwelling to be relocated should sea levels change. It was a building with a profound sense of humility, despite its grand presence. Inside, the home felt both robust and warm. The walls, lined entirely with locally sourced macrocarpa timber, continued the poetic expression of weathering driftwood. The floor was ready for farm boots and the scuff marks of children. This was a place for living, for making memories. It was a space that invited, not just accommodated, a group of up to 14 guests. Large storm shutters with barn bracing offered a sense of adaptability, allowing the interior to be either open to the dramatic coastal winds or battened down for a cozy night by the fire. The heart of the home was a central, double-sided fireplace, a weighty silvered gesture clad in rugged stone quarried directly from the shoreline. It rose to a lofty 5.5 meters, accentuating the expansive volume and generous scale of the design. The soaring roofline and full-height glass walls connected visitors to the ever-changing coast, bringing the drama of the landscape inside. Inset library shelving, plush wool rugs made from local Annandale fleece, and a welcoming lounge setting created an intimate feeling within the grand space. The layout was a thoughtful balance of shared and private spaces. Three main bedroom suites each featured a freestanding bathtub with an uninterrupted view of the striking bay, offering tranquil retreats for individual guests. A bunk room, accommodating an additional eight, was set around the communal areas, ensuring that the spirit of gathering and togetherness remained a core part of the experience.
