Original Video:    • Stravinsky The Rite of Spring // London Sy...   Artist's Channel:    / @londonsymphonyorchestra   The Rite of Spring is a ballet (here it is not staged) that depicts the pagan ritual of sacrificing a young woman to appease the gods. This is easily the most famous orchestral work of the first half of the 20th century, and it was later used in Disney’s Fantasia for the dinosaur sequence. Also, John Williams was highly influenced by this work (just listen to the beginning of Part II (Scene 9) and compare it to the music from the sand planet scene in Star Wars). The orchestration is unusually complex and includes some unconventional instruments such as an alto flute, a bass trumpet, two Wagner tubas, and a guiro. I can go on forever about this piece, but I will instead leave you with these final thoughts: 1). This style of music is known as primitivism, and another famous example of this style is Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. 2). The music is terrifying. 3). It’s an effing masterpiece. I hope you enjoy it!
