Konkani Coastal Food Delicacy's Goan and Malvani thalis in Margao, South Goa, October 2023

Today, we’re visiting a Margao joint that’s a lunchtime favourite with shoppers at New Market and residents and office goers of Pajifond. Sadanand Bandekar’s Konkani Coastal Food Delicacy has been serving both Malvani and Goan food here for 22 years. Contact: 9763822983 Konkani Coastal is behind Grace Church and next to Reliance Trade Centre in Pajifond, Margao. From Margao’s Municipal Garden, turn left after Grace Church onto Isidor Baptista Road, then left again onto Varde Valaulikar Road. A short way up is the Reliance Trade Centre on the left. After that you’ll see Zantye’s Cashews on the corner, in the same line as Konkani Coastal. Konkani Coastal is a small place, with 6 tables inside and 4 out. Besides the printed menu, the day’s fresh catch and prices are on the board inside, next to the kitchen. Today, Maria is having veg thali, Viola is trying the Konkani chicken thali and Lesley is having the Goan prawn curry rice plate Goan prawn curry rice plate: prawn curry, teesrio (shellfish), nal kari (sol kari with coconut milk), (potato and ridge gourd) bhaji, kismur (dried prawns salad), salad, rice and kingfish rawa fry Konkani chicken thali: chapati, chicken curry, gravy, nal kari, bhaji, salad and rice Veg thali: papad, chapati, dal, kurma, patal bhaji, nal kari, bhaji, salad and rice We’re also having some Konkani special mutton chilli. The mutton was soft and boneless, but some pieces were hard. It was not spicy. The prawn curry had nice big prawns. The teesrio was interesting but it’s not Goan. The turai (ridge gourd/ghosalya) bhaji was quite tasty. The kingfish was fried perfectly and the piece was nice and fat The portions are generous. You feel fully satiated While we were eating, the place was steadily filling up with shoppers and office goers pausing for lunch. Quite soon, people were waiting for a table to get free. Next time we want to try the Konkani seafood biryanis here (prawns Rs 250, squids Rs 200, mixed seafood Rs 250). Konkani also has Goan special (Rs 280) and Malvani (Rs 180) fish curry rice plate, normal fish thali (Rs 100) and special fish thali (Rs 180). Tisri (Rs 220), kalva (oyster; Rs 220), squid (Rs 220), crab (Rs 450), mori mutton (shark Rs 300) and prawn masala (Rs 350), separate fish curry (Rs 100), prawn curry (small; Rs 200), bangdo curry (mackerel; Rs 180). Kalva (Rs 250), squids (Rs 250), shark (Rs 350), prawns (Rs 300), crab (Rs 500) and tisri sukka (Rs 300). There are also a few more chicken and mutton Malvani style dishes and the usual Chinese and North Indian dishes.
