Inside 15 Vintage Campers at the RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart, IN | DIY Travel Trailer Ideas
Step inside 15 vintage campers and travel trailers at the RV Hall of Fame & Museum in Elkhart, Indiana. From the earliest handmade trailers of the 1910s to shiny Airstreams, Shastas and Winnebagos of the '50 and '60s. I stopped here while working on my own DIY tiny cabin on wheels to get layout ideas, design inspiration, and clever space-saving tricks from the pioneers of RV living. If you love classic campers, tiny houses, or off-grid DIY builds, you’re gonna want to see this one. In this video, I tour vintage campers and travel trailers (plus 1 "housecar"), showing how early DIY builders and RV pioneers shaped the campers we love today. You’ll see everything from leatherette and Masonite-sided trailers to early motorhomes, 1950s “canned hams,” and mid-century Coachmen and Winnebagos — plus the actual travel trailer owned by Charles Lindbergh. I’m currently building my own tiny cabin on wheels — basically a DIY travel trailer — so this trip was the perfect chance to pick up ideas and old school design details. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ RELATED LINKS Download Vintage DIY Camper Plans: https://trailers.bigguyinatinyhouse.com The RV/MH Hall of Fame & Museums Website: https://thervmhhalloffame.org/ Nomadland (2020) - Fox Searchlight Pictures: https://amzn.to/4ozXqiZ Cheap RV Living: / @cheaprvliving ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ FFROM THE GREAT DEPRESSION TO VAN LIFE & NOMADLAND During the Great Depression, many families turned to travel trailers and “house cars” as an affordable way to live and move in search of work — trading permanence for mobility. Nearly a century later, the Nomad and #vanlife movements echo that same spirit of freedom and resilience. Whether by necessity or choice, both generations found creative ways to make home wherever they parked it. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ TYPES OF RECREATIONAL VEHICLES EXPLAINED TENT TRAILERS – The first towable tent trailers date back to the 1910s, offering motorists a portable alternative to pitching a ground tent. They became especially popular after World War II, with modern folding and pop-up designs peaking in the 1950s–1970s. TRAVEL TRAILERS – Hard-sided travel trailers emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, led by early innovators like Bowlus and Airstream. Their popularity soared in the 1950s and 1960s, when postwar families hit the road in style during the golden age of American road travel. TEARDROP TRAILERS – Compact and lightweight teardrops first appeared in the 1930s, often as DIY builds featured in magazines like Mechanix Illustrated. They reached peak popularity in the 1940s and early 1950s, faded for a while, and then saw a strong resurgence in the 2000s among minimalist and retro RV enthusiasts. MOTORHOMES – Self-powered motorhomes evolved from the early housecars, but modern production really began in the 1950s with models like the Flxible and Travco. They grew steadily larger and more luxurious through the 1960s - 1980s, becoming icons of the open road. TRUCK CAMPERS – First appeared in the late 1940s, gaining traction through the 1950s and 1960s as lightweight, removable units for pickup trucks. Their popularity peaked in the 1970s, and today they remain popular with off-grid and overland travelers. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ VIDEO CONTENTS 00:00 - Intro 00:41 - Types of RVs Explained 01:48 - 1910 to 1949 06:03 - Vintage DIY Camper Plans 06:43 - 1950 to 1969 11:47 - Great Depression to Nomadland ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ MUSIC CREDITS “You’ve Got to Move” performed by Chris Rodrigues & Abby the Spoon Lady: • You Got To Move - Chris Rodrigues & Abby t...
