Digging Up, Transplanting, and Rooting - 20210203 Hello, This is Palgongsan Landscape Design and Gudeuljang. Today, we'll cover tree transplanting, rooting up, and rooting up. Small seedlings with a root diameter of less than 5cm can be planted by rooting up bare-root seedlings, as they are highly adaptable to their environment and will quickly establish themselves. However, when transplanting larger trees, rooting up before transplanting is essential to ensure their survival, rapid establishment, and healthy growth. The ideal time to transplant trees is while they are dormant, from late October to late March of the following year, during the root dormancy period. This is considered the least stressful time for transplanting. However, in landscaping, rooting up is done almost year-round. However, the unsuitable heat of the dog days of summer is often avoided. Now, let's learn about the rooting up method. Tools needed for root excavation include shovels, pickaxes, saws, pruning shears, rubber bands, coring tape, greening string, greening sacks, shovelers, and shovels. To excavate, first remove any debris (such as fallen leaves) above the tree roots, exposing the soil. In Korea, the recommended root excavation size is 4 or 5 times the root diameter. That is, 4 to 5 times the root diameter. So, if you draw a circle 1.5 times the root diameter and use it for root excavation, you'll get 1.5 + 1.5 + 1 = 4 times the root diameter. When digging, always point the shovel from the inside out. If the shovel goes inward, the soil will break, or the shovel will be pushed inward, resulting in an improperly shaped root ball. When digging, it's best to dig as wide as possible to avoid any interference from personnel. While the roots that emerge from the digging should be cut with sharp pruning shears or a saw, in the field, landscaping shovels are often sharpened with a grinder or a sharp pickaxe. Following a blunt shovel or pickaxe can damage the roots, leading to bacterial infection and the root ball breaking. Once the root ball is shaped, wrap it tightly with a burlap sack to prevent it from breaking, then secure it with a rubber band. During the Joseon Dynasty, the method of bundling was not widely used. It's said that during the Japanese colonial period, when the first root bunds were made, they wrapped them in sacks and tied them tightly with straw rope, ensuring they wouldn't deform even if thrown. Depending on the size of the root bund, they were tied with rubber bands into appropriate shapes—four-sided, six-sided, eight-sided, twelve-sided, sixteen-sided, twenty-sided, or twenty-sided. For roots exceeding 15cm in diameter, they were tied with a bansaengi (a type of rubber band) at various angles, further securing the bunds. That's all for today's story.
