Hong Kong in the 1980s - Wealth, Crowds and an Uncertain Future (Rare Images of a Legendary Era)

Step into Hong Kong at the height of the 1980s boom – one of the most crowded places on earth and one of the most expensive. This documentary travels from the packed streets and floating houseboat communities to the runway built out into the sea, showing a city that grew into a global hub on a strip of rock with almost no land to spare. We follow the story from the post-war refugee waves and the rise of the textile and toy industries to Hong Kong’s transformation into a free-port powerhouse: the busy container terminal, the glittering banks and stock exchange, and a gold market where money and bullion move freely across borders. At the same time, the film reveals the other side of the boom – low-paid factory workers with almost no social protection, families squeezed into tiny flats, and huge public housing blocks trying to keep up with a growing population. Against this backdrop, the documentary looks back at the colonial history – from the Opium Wars to the unequal treaties – and forward to the handover agreement that will return all of Hong Kong to China in 1997. Will the “Fragrant Harbour” remain a capitalist enclave for another 50 years, or will the city’s future take a different turn? This film captures Hong Kong at a unique moment: rich, restless, and unsure of what comes next.
