Cinematic Baku | Maiden Tower and Horse Carriage | Charcoal Drawing Process ​ ​In this charcoal work, inspired by the historical atmosphere of Baku, I draw the Maiden Tower, the stone streets of Icherisheher, and the horse carriage that carries the traces of the past in a cinematic composition, step-by-step. In this video, you can watch the real-time drawing process, shading techniques, and the formation of structural details. ​🏰 History and Construction Context of the Maiden Tower ​The Maiden Tower (Qiz Qalasi) is an important architectural structure located in Icherisheher, the historical center of Baku. There are various historical views regarding the exact construction date and initial purpose of the structure. The Kufic inscription on the exterior of the tower supports the view that it was built or reorganized during the Shirvanshahs period in the 12th century. Archaeological data reveal that there are older structural remains at the foundation level and that the tower reached its current form by being expanded over time. ​Different historical theories are proposed regarding the function of the structure, such as a defensive tower, an observation tower, or a lighthouse. Some research theoretically discusses the possibility that the structure may have served a function related to the Zoroastrian fire cult in the past. In 2000, Icherisheher was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the Shirvanshahs Palace and the Maiden Tower. ​📖 About the Drawing ​In this work, I interpreted the main themes covered in Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Also sprach Zarathustra) through a visual composition. I aimed to create a historical perspective by combining the concepts of "journey" and "self-overcoming," which are at the center of the work, with the aesthetic understanding of the 19th century. ​Historical Context and Iconography: While the Maiden Tower, representing the historical texture of Baku, symbolizes the deep-rooted past and timelessness of the structure, the horse carriage element I added to the composition carries the quality of a visual metaphor for the process of "becoming" and "progress" in Nietzsche's philosophy. ​Philosophical Foundation: The call of the character Zarathustra in Friedrich Nietzsche's work to descend from the mountains and open his own path to humanity is re-examined through the street atmosphere and the positioning of the figures in this drawing. In the drawing process, I aimed to combine the concrete data of history with the abstract structure of philosophical thought using the technical details of the 19th-century Realism movement (light-shadow balance, texture work). ​Visual Interpretation: The work presents the viewer with both a spatial experience and a literary context by bringing the historical identity of the space and a philosophical depth onto the same plane.
