$40 to $150 From The Same Region

Six wines, all from the same wine region. Can you guess where they're from? This was our hardest "Spot the Region" challenge yet—and nobody got it right. The Challenge: Six wines ranging from $38 to $150, all from the same region. Same place, different styles: Chardonnay, Rosé, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Shiraz. Some iconic producers, some lesser-known gems. The catch? These wines don't taste like what you'd expect from their region. Our Guesses: "South Africa or somewhere along those lines" "Chile... I went South America" "Victoria... maybe Yarra, Mornington Peninsula" One of us got close. But none of us nailed it. Why Was This So Hard? These wines are from iconic producers making atypical styles. They're not the "textbook" expressions of the region you'd find if you visited. They're storied wines from highly respected producers—but they don't scream their origin. The Reveal: Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia. Just north of Melbourne. Cool climate region known for perfumed Pinots, Chardonnay, and Shiraz Bordeaux blends. But these wines? They don't taste like the typical Yarra Valley tourist experience. The Lesson: Not all wines taste like their region—especially when producers are pushing boundaries, picking early, or making atypical styles. These are storied, respected wines from legendary Yarra Valley producers. But if you visit the region and taste at cellar doors, you won't necessarily find wines like these. The Debate: "Are these wines meant to be indicative of where they come from, or are they meant to be a gotcha?" When iconic producers make atypical wines, does that represent the region or challenge it? The Verdict: This was the hardest "Spot the Region" challenge we've done. Same region, wildly different styles. Same place can make lean 12% Chardonnay, oxidative whites, capsicum Cabernet, and $130 Shiraz blends. Region doesn't always equal consistency.
