This TV Hoax Caused PTSD - The Story of Ghostwatch

Ghostwatch is a one-off TV show that aired on Halloween in 1992. It begins with Michael Parkinson, a TV veteran and trusted household name, telling us we're about to watch a live investigation into the paranormal. Specifically, the Early family's haunted house in North London. But he's lying. Ghostwatch was carefully crafted to fool the British public. Clever camera work, an unusual premise, and familiar faces paved the way for one of the worst TV hoaxes of all time. Millions tuned in to watch Ghostwatch on Halloween night and were horrified to see shadowy figures, unexplained supernatural phenomena, and children speaking in tongues. Tragically, 18-year-old Martin Denham took his own life just a few days after watching Ghostwatch. The impact of the show was felt for years to come. Two years after Ghostwatch made its debut, the British Medical Journal published a report stating that two young children had been diagnosed with PTSD, the first case of TV-induced PTSD ever.
