Like its "cousins", the Neapolitan Mafia or the Calabrian N'drangheta, Cosa Nostra is one of the most violent networks of organized crime in Italy. For over 150 years, it has controlled a large part of the economy and daily life of Sicily, via the "pizzo", a racketeering system that brings in a billion euros per year. But the blanket of silence that this criminal organization imposes on the island and its capital, Palermo, is slowly cracking. Since 2006, the police have launched a major offensive against the Sicilian mafia. They managed to arrest Bernardo Provenzano, the "godfather of godfathers". And a large part of the inhabitants, as well as journalists, join forces, sometimes at the risk of their lives, to denounce the terror imposed by Cosa Nostra.
