Episode 23 Walleye trip for the Record Books Show Date: June 6, 2026 Guide: Danny Herbeck [807-216-8866] Accommodations: Andy Myers Lodge, Vermilion Bay [https://www.andymyerslodge.com | 888-727-5865] This week we're headed north to Eagle Lake with longtime friend and guide Danny Herbeck, and what unfolds is something none of us will ever forget. As anglers, we all spend plenty of days grinding through tough conditions. We've battled cold fronts, sat through sleet, endured long stretches without a bite, and driven home wondering what we could have done differently. Every once in a while, though, the fishing world gives you something back. This was one of those trips. Last year Danny told us, "You need to come up in May." He felt the timing could produce something special, so we loaded up the truck, picked up Josh on the way north, and made our way to Eagle Lake and Andy Myers Lodge. Even then, we weren't sure what we'd find. Ice had only recently left the lake, and we wondered if we might be arriving a little too early. Instead, we arrived at exactly the right moment. The walleyes had recently finished spawning and were feeding aggressively. From the very first casts, it was obvious we had stumbled into something extraordinary. Fish after fish crushed Kalin's plastics with a level of aggression that almost seemed impossible. There was barely enough time to reset between bites before another rod was bent over. What made the trip even more remarkable wasn't just the numbers—it was the size. Nearly every fish seemed bigger than the last. Mid-20-inch walleyes became routine, upper-20-inch fish were common, and several fish pushed beyond the 30-inch mark. It felt less like fishing and more like being in the middle of a dream that nobody wanted to wake up from. We've been fortunate enough to fish some incredible places with some incredible people over the years, but every now and then a trip comes along that sets a new standard. This was one of those trips. Years from now, we'll still be talking about the day everything lined up and Eagle Lake showed us just how special it can be. ____________ Find us online: https://www.gillespiefishing.com/ facebook.com/gillespiefishing instagram.com/jgwwtv ____________ DISCLAIMER: This show was posted on the date listed above.
