"People don't read on the coast." That phrase is repeated so often that no one questions it anymore. But almost no one has asked where it comes from—or what it reveals about the conditions under which a reader is formed in the Colombian Caribbean. In this video, I'm not arguing that we read a lot. I'm talking about something more uncomfortable: what makes reading possible? Who had access, who had guidance, who had the time? Because growing up surrounded by books is not the same as growing up without them. And the Caribbean didn't start from the same place. I also talk about orality, about school as the first mistake, and about what it means to read in a region where the word was always spoken first. And finally: my own story.
