Late in 1944, with the war still going, a designer named Ted Smith began meeting quietly with fourteen engineers from Douglas Aircraft — men who had spent years working on the A-26 Invader, a fast twin-engine attack bomber. They weren't meeting on company time. They were sketching, in the evenings, a business airplane built the way you'd build something meant to survive combat. So, when you set the silhouette of the A-26 next to the Aero Commander, the resemblance is unmistakable. High wing. A fat fuselage hanging underneath it like a gondola under a balloon. That's a bomber's bones, wearing a businessman's suit. The wing itself tells you why this plane flies the way it does. It's one continuous spar, running uninterrupted from tip to tip, with no heavy joints in the middle — just a single piece of aluminum doing all the structural work. In May of 1951, Ted Smith's company did something almost nobody would try today. They had a prototype called the Blue Goose, and to prove this twin-engine airplane could climb safely on one engine alone, they pulled the entire left propeller off the airframe, loaded the plane to maximum weight, and flew it — non-stop, eleven hundred and sixty miles, from Oklahoma City to Washington, D.C. — on one engine the whole way.
