Throughout their training, nutrition students will develop knowledge about food composition, the differences and benefits of each food group, behavior during and after preparation, as well as dietary techniques and different ways to prepare food. The undergraduate program lasts an average of four years. Nutrition students will take classes in Physiology, Anatomy, and Biochemistry, for example, with the goal of gaining a thorough understanding of the human body to create appropriate diets for each type of metabolism. Nutritionists can perform a variety of activities to promote and preserve health and quality of life through healthy eating. Their main responsibilities include: Preparing nutritional diagnoses: the nutritionist prescribes individual or group diets and nutritional supplements for both individuals with diseases whose treatment requires strict and specific dietary monitoring, and for healthy individuals. Food quality control in restaurants and cafeterias: the nutritionist selects suppliers, controls raw materials, and supervises food preparation, paying special attention to inventory and nutritional preservation. Planning, administration, and coordination of group feeding programs: nutritionists define balanced menus and manage food in companies, schools, shelters, prisons, hospitals, and hotels. The Nutrition program offers a generalist education, allowing graduates to find a diverse range of areas of expertise.
