Homepage of BasscoverPete https://basscoverpete.com/ Just another nice basspart of John McVie ! As always John varies in his staccato (short) and legato (long) notes. Most of the eight notes on the second half of the second and fourth beat are played staccato to give the groove a push. It’s interesting to look how the maingroove (for instance bar 5 -8) can be played with the open A-string. I personally like to play the A on the fifth fret of the E-string so you can give an accent to the note by lifting your finger of your right hand to create a small rest before the next note is being played. But when the A note is a passing note, it’s more comfortable to play the A note on the open A-string. When you look at the groove of bar 5 and 6 I start with playing the A note on the E-string and when the A becomes a passing note on the fourth count of bar 6 I play the A on the open string. You might discuss about playing the A note on the third count of bar 6. I’d rather play that note on the fifth fret on the E-string, but you can also play that on the open A-string ofcourse. That’s also the case in bar 10. Also there you have the option to play the A note on the thrid beat on the open string or not. I favor the fifth fret and on the fourth beat I play the A note on the open string. I advise you to try both ways of playing and find out what feels comfortable/good for you! Although it seems that John plays the maingroove everywhere the same: that isn’t the case! He varies in eight and quarter notes on the same chord a lot of the time.
