JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV - Rolling power outages in several areas have caused many vendors to complain. One such vendor is Sri, an electronics vendor in the Cicadas shopping area, Bandung City, West Java. Business activities at her store have been hampered by frequent power outages in the past few weeks. Vendors in other areas, such as Depok and Indramayu, West Java, and Blora and Semarang, Central Java, have also been affected by recent power outages. They have suffered losses and lost customers because their businesses have difficulty operating during power outages. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia stated that he has been in intensive communication with the President Director of PLN regarding technical measures to prevent power outages. Bahlil confirmed that there are no problems with coal supplies from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to PLN. However, PLN needs to ensure the smooth distribution of coal to PLN power plants and its partners. Gadjah Mada University energy economist Fahmy Radhi believes the government needs to review the domestic coal price, known as the Domestic Market Obligation (DMO). Currently, coal producers are required to supply 25 percent of their total production, which is sold at US$70 per metric ton, to PLN, as per the DMO regulations. This figure is lower than the global coal price, which is currently above US$100 per metric ton. Last Saturday, PLN apologized for the rolling blackouts on Java. PLN explained that the blackouts were caused by technical difficulties at two of its partner power plants and coal supply issues. The government needs to act quickly because people's lives depend on constant electricity.
