In a small provincial town, the arrival of a new official, Mr. Ponza, arouses an obsessive curiosity among the neighbors. He keeps his wife locked in the house and does not allow her to meet her mother, Mrs. Frola (his mother-in-law). The two women communicate only from a distance, through letters left in a basket on the balcony. Exasperated by the mystery, the neighbors interrogate the two, discovering two completely opposite and equally logical versions: 1. The Husband's Version: He claims that his first wife (Mrs. Frola's daughter) died, and he remarried. He keeps his current wife locked up only to protect his mother-in-law, who has gone mad with grief and believes that the new woman is, in fact, her daughter too. 2. The Mother-in-law's Version: She claims that her son-in-law is the crazy one. Her daughter is alive, but due to the husband's sick jealousy, everyone (including the girl) has to pretend that she is a "second wife" in order not to trigger his seizures. The only one who is amused by the neighbors' gossip and desperate investigations is Laudisi, who ironically explains to them that the absolute truth does not exist. To settle the dispute, the neighbors bring the mysterious wife into the living room. Wearing a black veil that hides her face, she refuses to agree with anyone and utters the play's famous conclusion: "For myself, I am nobody. I am what everyone thinks I am." The woman assumes both identities to protect their saving illusions, leaving the community completely confused, while Laudisi bursts into mocking laughter. QUESTION: What is the message Pirandello wants to convey through this play? ------------- Cast: Dem Rădulescu, Dorina Lazar, Adina Popescu, Ileana Stana Ionescu, Ştefan Mihăilescu Brăila, Tamara Buciuceanu, Dan Condurache, Paula Sava, Mircea Şeptilici, Victor Ştrengaru, Agatha Nicolau, Candid Stoica.
