¿El Bautismo Salva? Los Padres de la Iglesia Destruyen el Mito del “Solo Símbolo”

In this new episode of The Church Fathers Answer, we analyze what the first Christians believed about baptism, baptismal regeneration, the new birth, and the remission of sins. The historical evidence is compelling: from the early Church to the great Church Fathers, baptism was understood as much more than a simple public declaration of faith. Using the Bible by Monsignor Juan Straubinger, we examine fundamental passages such as John 3:3-5, where Christ teaches the necessity of being born of water and the Spirit; Acts 2:38, where St. Peter links baptism with the remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit; Titus 3:5, where St. Paul speaks explicitly of the washing of regeneration; as well as Mark 16:16 and Romans 6:3-4, essential texts for understanding baptism according to the Bible. Next, we will see how the Didache, one of the oldest documents of Christianity, describes the baptismal practice received from the Apostles. We will also study the testimonies of St. Justin Martyr, St. Irenaeus of Lyons, Tertullian, Origen of Alexandria, St. John Chrysostom, and St. Augustine, showing how the teaching on baptismal regeneration was universal throughout the early Church. Furthermore, we will address one of the most debated topics between Catholics and Protestants: infant baptism. Is it a later innovation or an apostolic tradition? The testimony of Origen and the historical practice of the Church shed surprising light on this question. Historical research reveals a little-known fact: during the first fifteen centuries of Christianity, no Christian author taught that baptism was merely symbolic. The idea of purely symbolic baptism only appears in the context of the Protestant Reformation and the Anabaptist movements of the 16th century. If you're interested in Catholic apologetics, Church history, patristics, Apostolic Tradition, the sacraments, the doctrine of the new birth, the study of the Church Fathers, the debate between Catholics and Evangelicals, the interpretation of John 3, biblical teaching on the Holy Spirit, salvation, the early Church, and the origins of Christianity, this episode was made for you.
