Down Storsvingen towards Hammerfest city centre 🚴‍♂️🌊 The church, AKS and a view towards Håja

Date: June 29, 2024 @Bikerfrode – Frode Thomassen In this 5-minute film, I take you on my bike ride through Hammerfest, taken from my longer film located on the canal. Here I cycle down from Storsvingen, with a great view of the city and the sea. Right at the start, we see Hammerfest Church right in front of us – one of the city’s most famous landmarks ⛪❄️ ⛪ Hammerfest Church – a symbol of the reconstruction Hammerfest Church was inaugurated in 1961 and is built in a modern, characteristic style. It stands on the same site as the old church that was completely destroyed in 1944, when German forces burned down the entire city during the forced evacuation. The only thing left after the war was the burial chapel, which today is an important memorial to the city’s dramatic history. 🏙️ Further down towards the city center I roll down towards the city center and pass: Scandic Hammerfest Police station And the red building you see above the trucks: Arctic Cultural Center (AKS) 🎭 AKS is the city's cultural center with a cinema, concerts, performances and events all year round. Hammerfest has a surprisingly rich cultural life for a small town – and AKS is the heart of it all. I stop for a moment to show you the view towards the cultural center before I cycle further down towards the quay. 🚴‍♂️ Two other cyclists on a trip On my way down to the sea, two other cyclists appear in front of me – clearly on a long trip with tents and full gear. Always nice to meet others who are out on an adventure. It adds a little extra atmosphere to the film. 🌊 View towards Håja As I approach the sea, you see Håja straight ahead. Many say it is “the world’s largest rock”, but technically Håja is an island – a steep, iconic rock formation that rises straight out of the sea. It is one of Hammerfest’s most famous natural motifs and has inspired both artists and architects. 🧭 Hammerfest – some history and facts Hammerfest has around 11,000 inhabitants and was granted city status in 1789. The city has a dramatic history, especially during World War II when it was completely destroyed and later rebuilt as a symbol of strength and will. Today Hammerfest is known for: The Melkøya LNG plant – one of Norway’s most important energy hubs ⚡🏭 An active cultural life with festivals, sports and volunteering Schools such as Breilia School and Hammerfest High School Jobs in energy, industry, service and the public sector Beautiful nature with mountains, sea and Arctic light Historically, the city has lived from fishing, trapping and shipping, and was one of the first cities in Europe with electric street lighting 💡 💬 What do you think?
