Caroline Shaw: Plan & Elevation | Manchester Collective

Space and proportion. Plan and elevation. It was these essential architectural ideas and two fundamental ways of drawing them that composer Caroline Shaw ruminated on in 2014, back when she was commissioned to write music inspired by Dumbarton Oaks. The beautiful grounds of this country-house estate in Washington D.C. are a layered and geometric landscape of pathways, trimmed vegetation, formal gardens and striking trees. By wandering these spaces, reflecting on personal spots within the garden and even referencing her previous work in the music, Shaw places her own voice in these places and reminds us that life’s endeavours aren’t always as simple as they seem on paper. “The actual journey and results are quite different (and perhaps more elevated) than the original plan” – Caroline Shaw 0:00-4:28 – I.
