Récit de tierce en taille from the Livre d'orgue by Nicolas de Grigny performed by Ben Bloor on the 45 stop 1954 Downes/Walker organ of the London Oratory Church on Thursday 25th March 2021. In the later years of his short life, Nicolas De Grigny was the organist of Reims Cathedral, historically the place where all French kings were crowned. The only surviving set of works by him, the Livre d’orgue consisting of a Mass and five alternatim hymns for major feast days, represent the high point of French Classical organ music. J.S. Bach held the achievement in such high regard, he copied the whole work out, and the source is still used as a reliable edition today. This movement comes from the Gloria of the Mass and features the distinctive French Classical timbre of the Tierce in the tenor register, with writing both melismatic and virtuosic.
