Beatrice Lesson 1 : Playthrough
Hi, I'm Andrea Vicari and I'm going to introduce the tune Beatrice to you if you haven't heard it before. It was written by saxophonist Sam Rivers and recorded by several artists and I'm going to look at two solos in the course of my lessons. The first will be Stan Getz and the second will be Joe Henderson from State of the Tenor. Joe Henderson's album, I think, is the definitive version and it's often the version that many people recall when they like this tune. It was released in 1986 and he recorded it without a piano, a chordal instrument, it's just got a bass and drums. I'm going to play a version of Beatrice in the first lesson and perform to you and I'm going to improvise and then after that I shall be looking at various aspects of the piece in future lessons.
