Truck Camping Where Lewis and Clark Almost Died!
Why did the Corps of Discovery almost starve to death in the Bitterroot Mountains when a "superhighway" to the West was just 100 miles south? Body: In September 1805, Lewis and Clark made a desperate decision at Lolo Pass that nearly ended their expedition. Facing a maze of fallen timber, deep snow, and zero game, they were forced to eat their own horses to survive. History tells us they were brave explorers pushing into the unknown—but geography tells us they were blind to a much better option. In this video, I take my truck camper into the heart of the Continental Divide to retrace the "path of starvation" from Lolo Pass to Lemhi Pass. We battle the winter elements, cook up some camp meals (thankfully not horse meat), and discover the "easy route" at Monida Pass that the expedition completely missed. But this isn't just about 1805. It’s a warning for 2025. Just like Lewis and Clark followed a fantasy map instead of the reality on the ground, modern land management is ignoring the data on our forests and wildlife. From suppressing fires to reintroducing wolves, are we choosing the "hard path" that leads to a biological desert? Join me for a winter adventure into the history—and future—of the American West.
