Can you forge SAN MAI with MILD STEEL?? | Handforged Kitchen Knife
Welcome back to my channel! Since I've got my anvil I've been wanting to forge SanMai. Now I finally got my borax, which is pretty hard to get here in Germany. As a first test, I used cheap steels (mild steel and 1075) to give this new project a try. It was so much fun, that I'll defiinitely make more of these blades! But in the future, I'll use 75Ni8 and O1 Tool steel, a popular damascus combination. I'm not super happy with the way this blade came out, the transition between the blade and the handle is too long I think. Also, the spine is way too thick. But the forgewelding went perfectly and the edge is razor sharp! Please tell me what you think about this video and where I can improve. As always - if you've got any questions, ask them! I'm always happy to help out other people as I gained most of my knowledge from YouTube and asking many questions to professionals. ****IF YOU WANT TO ORDER YOUR OWN CUSTOM KNIFE, HIT ME UP WITH A MAIL OR INSTAGRAM DM**** Website: https://spira-knives.jimdosite.com/ Etsy Store: https://www.etsy.com/de/shop/SpiraKnives Instagram: / spira_knives If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave me a comment. Have a nice day and keep grinding! About me: My name is Tim and I'm a 21 year old student. I got into knifemaking about two years ago, by watching videos similar to this one. Over the years, I gained some knowledge and last year I built this belt grinder to finally make my own knives. I do sell custom orders, mostly of kitchen knives, if you're interested, follow me on Instagram. My goal is to make inspirational and educating, as well as entertaining videos. I gained almost all my knowledge by watching YouTube ideos, so now I want to give something back. If you’ve got a question, feel free to write me a comment or start a conversation with me via my Instagram @spira_knives Future plans: I want to make educational as well as inspirational and entertaining videos. The topics will be setting up my workshop and mostly making knives. A few ideas that I will post soon: ̶a̶̶ ̶̶f̶̶u̶̶n̶̶k̶̶y̶̶ ̶̶b̶̶a̶̶b̶̶y̶̶ ̶̶c̶̶l̶̶e̶̶a̶̶v̶̶e̶̶r̶ (lost all files before I rendered the video) forging a drawknife for woodworking forging a herb chopper building a gas forge (DONE!:D) how I etch my logo -forging a touchmark stamp (DONE) All my builds and machines are low cost but good quality.
