A struggling school choir finds renewed hope in an inspiring new film that celebrates culture, friendship and the unifying power of music. At the heart of the story is Simiso, a musically gifted student who is appointed choir captain in an effort to help his school's choir reclaim its former glory. Determined to breathe new life into the group, Smiso introduces his passion for igwijo into the choir's repertoire, sparking a journey of self-discovery, teamwork and cultural pride. Bringing Smiso to life is rising star Thandolwethu Zondi, known for his roles in Outlaws Season 2 and Shaka Ilembe. Zondi describes the project as one of the most rewarding experiences of his career to date. "In my opinion, this is a 10 out of 10 project," says Zondi. "It challenged me as an actor, pushed me creatively and allowed me to build genuine friendships with my fellow cast members that extended beyond the set." While music plays a central role in the film, Zondi admits that singing is not his primary talent. "I do sing in the movie, but honestly, I'm more of a shower singer," he laughs. "I took on the role because it felt like a full-circle moment for me. I was introduced to igwijo around 2015 while I was in high school. I attended a Model C school where there wasn't much gwijo culture, so I was one of the students encouraging others to embrace it. It became a huge part of our football culture and school life. Then, almost exactly 10 years later, I got the opportunity to star in a film about igwijo. That connection made the experience incredibly special." The film showcases igwijo not only as a musical expression but as a powerful tool for building unity among young people. "iGwijo is always strongest when it's done collectively," explains Zondi. "That's one of the beautiful messages of the film. It highlights how igwijo can strengthen friendships among high school students and bring people together through a shared sense of identity and purpose." Zondi is joined by an impressive ensemble cast of talented young performers, including Likhey Booi, Masungulo Khosa, Mosa Lekwene and Carpo More. The film also features acclaimed industry veterans, including Muzi Mthabela (Isibaya, Jacob's Cross, Ring of Lies), Bongile Mantsai (Gqeberha, Blood Psalms, Grootboom & Sons), Siyasanga Papu (Gomora, Ekhaya Backpackers), Kayise Ngqula (Our Perfect Wedding, Ring of Lies, Housekeepers) and Zandile Msutwana (Gqeberha, The Queen, Grootboom & Sons). "I have to applaud the casting director for the pairings, especially myself and Likhey Booi," he says. "We had chemistry from day one and instantly connected as friends. The veteran actors were also incredibly welcoming and supportive. I remember Muzi Mthabela being especially inspiring on set, sharing wisdom about faith, life, and navigating the industry. We learned so much from the older cast members. From the youngest actors to the veterans, I genuinely believe it was perfectly cast."
