Marc Chagall Marc Chagall was a Russian-French artist who lived from 1887 to 1985. He was born in Vitebsk, a small town in what is now Belarus. Chagall was the eldest of nine children in a Hasidic Jewish family, and his upbringing would have a profound impact on his art throughout his life. Chagall's early years were marked by poverty and hardship. His family struggled to make ends meet, and Chagall was forced to work as a laborer from a young age. Despite these challenges, he showed a natural talent for art, and he began to take classes at a local art school. In 1910, Chagall moved to Paris, where he was exposed to the latest developments in modern art. He was particularly drawn to the works of the Fauvists and the Cubists, and he began to experiment with these styles in his own work. Chagall's art during this period was characterized by bold colors, distorted forms, and dreamlike imagery. During World War I, Chagall returned to Vitebsk, where he was appointed as the head of the Vitebsk School of Art. He used his position to promote his own unique vision of modern art, combining elements of folk art, Jewish tradition, and the avant-garde. Chagall's work during this period was deeply influenced by his Jewish heritage, and many of his paintings featured biblical themes and symbols.
