BSL poem John Wilson For a Deaf Friend
Deaf poet John Wilson’s signed poem (in British Sign Language with international signing) "For a Deaf Friend" is a poem that tells the story of a deaf man’s contributions to society that are not appreciated at first but are finally recognized by a very high honour. It was recorded as part of the second Signing Hands Across the Water festival at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, April 2014. The poems in this channel are part of the collection made as the University of Bristol Sign Language Poetry Anthology with the aim to study metaphor in sign language poetry. The poem is discussed in the book Introducing sign language literature folklore and creativity, by Rachel Sutton-Spence and Michiko Kaneko, published by Palgrave press.
