Just days before his inauguration, Donald Trump affirmed his desire to control Greenland, this autonomous territory dependent on Denmark, strategically important thanks to its significant mineral resources. For this fall, The Underside of the Maps heads to the Arctic, where the major issues of our century are being played out. First, the Bering Strait, the closest point of contact between Russia and the United States. It separates Chukotka, an autonomous Russian district, from Alaska by 85 km. Since 1945, the Bering Strait has been the barometer of relations between the two great powers. This strait is both a geographical and political border. Its geography, as it connects the Pacific Ocean to the Arctic Ocean, and its politics, as Russia and the United States clashed for nearly five decades during the Cold War, so much so that this border was nicknamed "the Ice Curtain," like the Iron Curtain that divided Europe in two.
