China’s Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) in a Changing Geopolitical Landscape: What Relevance for Africa and the Global South? The changing geopolitical landscape reflects a growing shift toward multipolarity, yet unilateral tendencies continue to undermine multilateralism and hinder progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the eradication of extreme poverty by 2030. In response to these shifts, China has in recent years proposed initiatives aimed at fostering a more stable and cooperative international environment. In March 2023, President Xi Jinping introduced the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), emphasizing respect for the diversity of civilizations. This vision was echoed on June 10, 2025, with the first United Nations International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations, designed to promote understanding in an era marked by division and mistrust. South Africa, with its diversity and unique struggle against apartheid and its commitment to a peaceful transition, is a prime example of civilizations and cultures in dialogue as it seeks to address its own development challenges while playing a constructive role in the region and in the global community. With this in mind, the Institute for Global Dialogue (IGD) and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of South Africa will host a seminar on the Global Civilization Initiative in an effort to better understand what role it could play in a changing geopolitical landscape that sees multilateralism in crisis. It interrogates to what extent this vision aligns with the UN Charter, particularly in promoting sovereign equality, non-intervention, peaceful resolution of disputes, and human rights through inclusive development. Locating the dialogue in a context of Africa’s place in a changing geopolitical landscape, it will be important to understand to what extent the Global Civilization Initiative aligns with the aspirations of Africa and the global South as they seek to advance the development of their countries and citizens.
