A BLOODY REGIME CHANGE / Can Dündar comments On July 15, 2016, I was in Barcelona. Five months had passed since my release from Silivri prison. I had taken a short vacation to escape the chaos I had experienced and to finish the book I was working on. In the late afternoon, my phone rang. My colleague from the Cumhuriyet newspaper's editorial office told me there was activity on the Bosphorus Bridge, that soldiers were stopping vehicles. "It looks like a coup attempt," he said. Of course, I couldn't believe it at first… Although August was approaching and there were rumors of a major operation in the upper echelons of the army, no one thought of a coup. As the hours passed, the seriousness of the situation became clear. I immediately booked a seat on the first flight to Istanbul the next morning. That night, I stayed up all night watching television and on the phone. In the morning, there was a different Turkey… And my lawyers told me that this Turkey was very dangerous for someone like me, who had just been released from prison and survived an assassination attempt. They advised me to stay in Europe for a while longer. That "while longer" marked its tenth anniversary this week.
