These fascinating objects are some of the most extreme objects in the universe, with incredibly strong magnetic fields and gravitational forces. They also spin really fast, sometimes hundreds of times per second. All that offers astronomers a unique window into the extreme physics and the most extreme conditions in the universe. But there are more dark and mysterious secrets hidden within their spinning cores. Pulsars are like lighthouses in space, beaming out electromagnetic radiation from their magnetic poles. If the beam points towards Earth, we can detect the pulses of radiation as regular flashes of light. Some scientists believe that pulsars could be used as beacons to search for extraterrestrial life, as the changes in their signals could be caused by intelligent lifeforms sending us a secret message.
