Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band - Full Concert [HD] | Live at North Sea Jazz Festival 1996
Poncho Sanchez (born October 30, 1951) is an American musician. He is active in Latin jazz as a singer, orchestra leader and conga player. In 2000, he and his ensemble won the Grammy Award for «Best Latin Jazz Album» for their work on the Concord Picante album Latin Soul. PONCHO SANCHEZ LATIN JAZZ BAND SATURDAY 13 JULY 1996 • JAN STEEN ZAAL • The Hague, The Netherlands Sanchez has performed with artists such as Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Hugh Masekela, Clare Fischer and Tower of Power. He is considered one of the most important percussionists in the United States and has released dozens of LP and CD albums. Poncho Sanchez, the youngest of eleven children, was born in Laredo, Texas and grew up in Norwalk, California, while attending Cerritos College. Growing up, he was exposed to and influenced by two different musical styles: Afro-Cuban music (mambo, son, cha-cha, rumba, guaracha, and Changui) by Tito Puente and others and bop, including the works of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Originally a guitarist, he discovered his singing talent during an audition for the R&B band The Halos, which was rehearsing across the street from his home. Sanchez became the lead singer of The Halos and taught himself to play the flute, drums and timbales as a self-taught musician, before finally deciding to practice conga drumming in high school. In 1975, Sanchez's idol, vibraphonist Cal Tjader, invited him to perform with his band. Seeing the young man's talent, Tjader hired Sanchez for a week before officially making him a full member of the ensemble. Sanchez played a crucial role as a conguero for a number of years until Tjader's death in 1982. Before he passed away, Tjader suggested that Concord Records founder Carl Jefferson sign Sanchez and his soon-to-be-formed band under the Concord Picante label. Tjader's wishes were honored and the first two records were composed and arranged by Clare Fischer, a former employee of Tjader. Sanchez produced 19 albums for the label and eventually won a Grammy for his work. AllMusic described Sanchez as one of the most influential percussionists in jazz. His CD Do It! from 2005 contains the funk band Tower of Power on two tracks, as well as the South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela. Sanchez regularly collaborates with bandleader José Rizo. He played conga on the Grammy-nominated album Mongorama, produced by Rizo. Sanchez was mentioned on the single Tangerine by Ilya Serov, released on January 9, 2018. He has released a total of 19 albums on Concord Records. His ensemble won the «Best Latin Jazz Album» award for Latin Soul at the 2000 Grammy Awards (released by Concord Picante).
