Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee | Based on a True Story

Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee is trying to do a lot of things. It is a powerful interpretation of the American Indian assimilation policy, but it has its problems. This was a difficult movie to review, because I’m a Western historian, and I know just how sensitive a topic this is. The book expresses details of the history of American expansionism from a point of view that is critical of its effects on the Native Americans. Brown describes Native Americans' displacement through forced relocations and years of warfare waged by the United States federal government. The government's dealings are portrayed as a continuing effort to destroy the culture, religion, and way of life of Native American peoples.[1] Helen Hunt Jackson's A Century of Dishonor is often considered a nineteenth-century precursor to Dee Brown's writing.[2] Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is a 2007 historical drama television film adapted from the book of the same name by Dee Brown. The film was written by Daniel Giat, directed by Yves Simoneau and produced by HBO Films. The book on which the movie is based is a history of Native Americans in the American West in the 1860s and 1870s, focusing upon the transition from traditional ways of living to living on reservations and their treatment during that period. The title of the film and the book is taken from a line in the Stephen Vincent Benet poem "American Names."
